For a work restriction, how many docror’s notes need to be provided?

My husband recently had surgery on his neck. He has a doctor’s note stating he can work no more than 8 hours a day. The HR rep had a meeting with him asking him why he could not work more than 8 hours. He said I surgery. She then said she needs more detail as to why. He said his number is at the bottom, call and ask him. She said no, he needed another note giving additional details. Aren’t there laws protecting his privacy? Is this something his company can demand? This is not the first time the HR team has bullied someone into no longer having doctor restrictions.

From what you have written, the human resources department of your employer is entitled to know why your husband can work 8 hours a day but no more since he had surgery on his neck. The request seems reasonable in that an 8 hour a day shift is a full day. I suggest that your husband's physician give additional details as to the inquiry by the human resources department.
