What to do if I first went to court and they told me to come back with a lawyer?

If I cannot do so, how can I pursue my sentencing? It is my first offense and I am 17.

I'm not sure why you would have been told that, but the judge probably wanted to protect your rights in some way.  If you are low income or indigent, the court will appoint a lawyer for you.  You need to seek out the public defenders office and tell them what was told to you.  If you can afford to do so, contact a criminal defense attorney right away.
