Yes your employer can do this, and with no notice. In fact an employer can set the terms and conditions of employment as it deems ncessary; this includes hours of operation. So absent company policy, an employment contract or a union agreement to the contrary, your employer's action was perfectly permissible. This is called employment "at will". For your part you can choose to work for this employer or not (although this may not be much of a chice since quitting would be your alternative).
Note: Also, no form of actionable discrimination mus tbe factor in an employee's treatment.
