In order to find a low-cost attorney, there are several things that you can do. Since this is a criminal matter, you can see if you qualify for representation by the Public Defender's office. If not, see if Legal Aid may be able to assist you; while there are income requirements they may differ from those needed for obtaining a PD. Also, depending on the severity of the charge, see if there is a law school in the area in which you must appear; typically they handle lesser criminal matters for free and/or low cost. Additionlly, you can contact the local bar association in the area (county, city or state); they may have list of attorneys who will handle your case for no charge (i.e. "pro bono") or a small fee, depending on your income and/or circumstances.
