I already got the car registered in another state to my name as a gift (to save further loss) and the old title is with DMV now. I paid $5700 cash.

Hello. I urge you to seek attorney help in this matter. In addition to possible civil liability, it would appear that criminal conduct may be involved, so law enforcement authorities may need to be informed. In Minnesota, regarding civil matters, sometimes treble damages are awarded to a claimant.
Some attorneys, myself included, will confer for free, at no charge. Then, if legal work is performed, some attorneys, myself included, will provide a reduced fee for need. All the best
