An employee at a store asked to seach my bag and I said no and then I stormed out of the store. She followed me and may have got my license plate number.

If you indeed are suspected of shoplifting and the story is able to tell through its camera/video system that you stole something, then it doesn't have to physically see your purse. The police may be called and the police can locate you to interview you. If the police obtain a search warrant, it can search. If the police view the video and find a crime has taken place, it can obtain an arrest warrant.
