First, do you have a "policy" posted so that your customers know what you will do when items are left? Second, in most states, the protocol varies depending upon the type of item you are holding. I would assume that you have already contacted the customer and shared the importance of them picking up the item soon. I would assume that you have sent them a certified letter stating that storage fees and selling the itme are possibilities if they do not pick up the itme within the legal time frame.
