Technically you can be fined for intentionally failing to appear.  However to make it stick, they would have to prove that you actually received the summons... which would be extremely difficult unless you volunteered your accident.  Because it is difficult to prove, many jurisidictions don't even seek to enforce it. More than likely, the court will simply move on to the next court date without any issues for you.
