Whether or not you can travel by air with an outstanding warrant largely depends on just where you are traveling. Most airlines do not check passenger names against databases that might provide a list of persons with outstanding warrants. It would be just too tedious and expensive too do so. However, international flights are a different matter altogether. The security procedures for such travel do involve checking criminal databases. Therefore, if you are traveling internationally it is likely that your name will show up. And even if your name doesn't show up as you are leaving the U.S, you have other security checks to pass. For example, once you arrive at your destination you'll typically have to provide a visa upon entering and in order to obtain one a background check will be required. So if you have any outstanding warrants, you won't be able to obtain a visa so you'll be refused entry into that country.
