If it wasn't actually Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave and this is not being done in violation of a written employment contract, then you can indeed be demoted and have wages cut on returning from personal leave. The law lets your employer demote you or cut your wages at will if yiu don't have a contract, and while FMLA protects your position and earnings, other forms of leave do not.
