If you don't have a written employment contract limiting the reasons or process for/by which you could be disciplined or terminated, you are an "employee at will". That means (among other things, that you could be disciplined or even terminated at any time, for any reason, even unfair or silly onea like a supervisor being upset that you don't say "hi." Employees at will have essentially no rights in or to their jobs or protection for their jobs. So they can discipline, etc. you for this reason.
