There is no requirement that an employee be told that he or she is on probation, unless the employee has some written employment contract (including a union or collective bargaining agreement) requiring it. Otherwise, an employee may be on probation without any notice--after all, "probation" is not required, and in the absence of a contract to the contrary, the employer could simply directly and immediately terminate, suspend, demote, etc. the employee any way.
