What are the consequences if I can’t pay

I can’t pay my rent and I’ve moved out but now my landlord is asking for the month that I missed. We had a verbal month-to-month contract. What legal action can he take and what should I expect?

He can sue you for the money: you had an oral (that, not "verbal," is the correct term) agreement or contract (a lease is a contract) that you would pay him a certain amount per month to live there. He provided the place to live; you did not pay. Hence, you breached or violated that contract and he can sue you for the breach, to get the money you owe him.
