Company History: Founded in 1961, Humana is the official health insurance provider to the PGA and Champions golf tours. Humana was originally founded as a nursing home company under the name Extendicare by David A. Jones, Sr. and Wendell Cherry. In 1972, Extendicare began to move away from the nursing home chain and started to purchase hospitals. It quickly became the world’s largest hospital company in the 1980’s. The Corporate name of the company was changed to Humana Inc in 1974. Humana took over American Medicorp Inc. in 1978 which doubled the size of the company. In 1980 Humana began marketing health insurance products and in 2001 Humana partnered with Navigy Inc. to launch Availity. Starting in 2005, Humana began a business partnership with Virgin Group and in 2006 Humana and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention entered into a partnership. In 2011 Humana launched mobileStorm, the first HIPAA-compliant messaging platform. In 2013 Humana was ranked 73 on the Fotune 500 list, making it the highest ranked company based in Kentucky. Humana is the third largest health insurance provider in the nation and currently employees approximately 52,000 people.
