Oftentimes, a lawyer from out of state (one not licensed in the state in which your trial is) can obtain leave of court to try the case. It is very limited circumstances and there are certain criteria that lawyer must have. Otherwise, it is much wiser to have a criminal defense attorney licensed in the state in which your trial was to consider your options for a post-conviction appeal or second trial. You can contact the state bar for lists of private criminal defense attorneys or if you have limited funds, you might qualify for a public defender.
