Do we have to use a lawyer to get a divorce?
We have 2 kids and own 2 homes. One home is paid for, one we currently have 15 years left on the mortgage. We are both being civil about this and do not want to drag it out.

If you are both in agreement as to everything then it should not be dragged out as you say. Hiring an attorney does not ncessarily make a situation any less civil. Attorneys advise you of your rights and then take their cues from you. Although you think that it is cut and dry, because you have two children there will be a whole set of additional paperwork that must be submitted along with financial disclosure. It can be over whelming to do it on your own. And by the way, are there retirement accounts and pensions involved? Are you waving your rights to them? At least go for a consultation. Then you can see from there. Good luck.
