If you are in the military, you are well aware of the inherent risk involved with certain roles in the military, and should do your best to provide for your family by purchasing military life insurance. Life insurance companies know the reality of the risks you take, and it can be difficult to obtain affordable life insurance for military personnel. Most life insurance policies have war exclusion or a terrorist exclusion which means that the policy would not pay if your death is associated with combat or military force or from an act of terrorism. This can be difficult for an active duty military man or woman that would like to protect their family with the proper amount of life insurance protection. However, there are options for military life insurance.
Options for Military Life Insurance
Due to exclusions in policies issued by private life insurance company, many life policies do not provide the reliable coverage that military service people would need. Because of this, there have been some alternative providers of military life insurance that can meet your needs
- Serviceman Group Life Insurance or SGLI: SGLI provides military life insurance in increments of $50,000 up to $400,000 without the traditional war exclusion. You can also get coverage for children and spouses. After retiring, the veteran can convert his benefit to Veterans Group Life Insurance benefit.
- Army and Air Force Mutual Aid Association or AAFMA: AAFMA is a non-profit organization that offers term military insurance that has no war, no aviation and no terrorism clauses.
- Private companies: There are some private insurance companies that tailor coverage for Military Life insurance needs. USAA is one such company that provides term insurance that will supplement SGLI and will guarantee coverage (without a medical exam) for military life insurance after you leave the armed forces when your SGLI ends.
TIP: Do not get discouraged if private life insurance companies do not meet your needs. Getting military life insurance is very important, and you should either talk to your fellow members of the armed services or ask an experienced life insurance agent for assistance in finding an affordable military life insurance policy.
Obtaining military life insurance to properly cover you family is an important thing to do, and there are organizations who can help you make the right life insurance purchase. Talk with an agent to see how much coverage you need and find the right policy to cover your family should anything happen to you while you serve. As with any life insurance policy, be sure to shop and compare your available quotes before you make a purchase.
