Company History: United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company (USF&G) of Baltimore, Maryland, (with its subsidiaries), was acquired in 1998 by The St. Paul Companies headquartered in Minnesota. Following additional corporate acquisitions and restructuring, the acquiring company is now known as The Travelers Companies, headed by a publicly traded holding company. Travelers is a leading provider of commercial property and casualty insurance. It also provides auto and homeowners insurance and asset management services. Travelers operates through a large fleet of subsidiaries in all U.S. states and all Canadian provinces. Travelers has about 32,000 employees. The main predecessor companies were the St. Paul Companies based in Minnesota (founded in 1853) and the Travelers Property Casualty Corporation of Connecticut, founded in 1864. Travelers reacquired its familiar red ubrella logo from Citigroup in 2007.
Principle Sales Methods: Travelers distributes its products through its subsidiaries to businesses, government units, associations and individuals operating in 3 business segments. The Business Insurance Segment provides property and liability coverage, workers’ compensation, commercial auto, and general liability through over 7,000 independent agents and brokers. The Financial, Professional, and International Insurance Segment provides surety, financial liability, and property/casualty coverages through over 6,000 independent agents and brokers in the U.S. as well as through subsidiaries in Mexico, Canada and the U.K. The Personal Insurance Segment sells personal auto and homeowner coverages to individuals through more than 8,500 independent agents, sponsoring organizations and joint marketing agreements in the U.S.
Auto Business: Personal auto and homeowners’ are sold through independent agents, sponsoring organizations and joint marketing agreements. In Massachusetts, automobile insurance is provided by The Premier Insurance Company of Massachusetts.
