Company Overview:
Company History: The Windsor-Mount Joy Mutual Insurance Company established itself as an insurance business in 1844 in Mount Joy, PA. It is the successor of two Pennsylvania-based insurance companies that merged in 1963. Windsor-Mount Joy began by selling fire insurance, and today provides niche property and homeowners insurance policies for seasonal dwellings, marine properties, homeowners insurance products, and more.
Principle Sales Methods: Policies are sold through about 200 independent agencies, 5 brokers and 3 general agents. Two of the general agents focus on automobile physical damage insurance and the third sells primarily policies for manufactured housing. Windsor-Mount Joy also has an exclusive general agency agreement with an agency owned by the company’s chairman. The general agency sells insurance, underwrites risks, and provides technical and marketing services. In 2005, 55% of business was homeowner’s multi peril, 9.7% ocean marine, 8.6% auto physical damage, 8.6% fire, 5.7% allied lines, 12.4% all other lines. Virginia accounted for 30.0% of business in 2005, Pennsylvania 25%, and Delaware 19%.
Auto Business: Auto physical damage coverage accounts for about 9% of Windsor-Mount Joy’s business.
Homeowners Business: Windsor homeowners insurance accounts for more than half of Windsor-Mount Joy’s business, and many of the home insurance policies are for manufactured homes and seasonal properties.
