If 7 months after the accident the insurers are going to mitigation with each side fighting for damages costs, are we allowed to work on the car ourselves or sell the it to help buy another one?

The police officer ruled no one “at fault” in an intersection accident. We just found out it could still be a year or more from this point. This was my husbands work car. We cant afford to put it in a shop to be fixed and hope to receive some money out of the claim later. The car was paid off; we have title.

Based upon what you have written about, I would first have a couple of estimates done for the car's repair by licensed automotive people as well as take photographs and vdeotape of it. Then, do your best on your own to get it repaired on your own while the insurance carriers go to mediation as to who is reponsible for the costs of repairs in the end.
