Did you have an employment contract or union agreement that afforded you protection regarding a lay off? Did your treatment constitute some form of legally actionable discrimination (e.g. was it due to your age (over 40), race, religion, disability, gender, nationality)? If not, then as an "at will" worker, your employer could have dismissed you for any reason or no reason at all, with or without notice.
