Am I able to sponsor a friend for a green card?

I am a non-family member and US citizen and just wanted to know if helping him get a green card is possible. What would the costs would be?

No, it is not possible to petition a friend.  It is only possible to petition a qualifying relative or through an offer of employment.  Another category is through an offer of marriage (fiance(e) visa petition).  If your friend does not fit into any of those categories, he/she may try to enter the US as a visitor first and then look for other ways to stay in the US.
