Yes, you can request to postpone the trial date, or request a continuance. I suggest you contact the court cleck and ask how to make a motion for a continuance until you hire an attorney to represent you. If you never received a summons there may also be an issue of service of process in the case. That is something that your lawyer could also make a motion on in your favor.
