Can we make the dealer pay for the repairs or get a refund?

You first need to see i the van that you bought is still under any warranty as the first solution to your problem. Next, whether or not the dealership is repsonsible for the transmission's repair depends if you bought the vehicle "as is" or not.
If the purchase was "as is" then the only way the dealership would be responsible for the repair of the transmission would be if it knew about the problem and did not disclose such to you before the purchase.
