Can a company delay taking benefit deductions from paychecks for 6 months andinstead makethe employees pay up front for their health care coverage?

I work for Company A. Company A bought Company B. Company B’s employees were covered by a union. The union took in Company A’s employees effective 1/1. The union provides health care as does the company with the ability to take out pre-tax dollars for benefits, however, they are now telling us that deductions will not begin until 3/15/12 for the Q3, making us have to pay in full our health care coverage, or have a lapse in benefits for 6 months, something we were promised would not happen.

Not sure who is telling you this but if you are not a union member, then perhaps it may be an issue of the union membership problem. You may wish to talk to the union ward about this matter and if you do not get an answer there, you may wish to immediately bring this up to the state labor department and health insurance department that regulates the health insurance. This is not a COBRA situation but it appears that either you are not getting the insurance you deserve to have or there was a bargained negotiation during the sale.
