Can a credit card debt collector still try to collect on a debt from 18 years ago?

My fiance had a credit card from 19 years ago that they are still calling and sending letters to collect. Don’t they not only have to write it off?

A third party debt collector can try to collect on an obligation that is eighteen (18) years old or so, however there is no obligation for your fiance' to pay it for the simple reason that the statute of limitations to bring suit has long ago passed.

I would write the third party collection company a letter along this line advising that the debt if owed is time barred from collection and that further pursuit of the claim could subject the third party debt collector to a claim for unfair debt collection practices.

Good question.
