Can a man stop paying permanent alimony if he retires?
We were married for 40 years and have been divorced for
6 years. He wants to retire so he is taking me to court to stop alimony. I have not worked during marriage or after. I am 65 years old.

He cannot automatically stop paying alimony, but he can apply to the court, as he is doing, for a court order stopping alimony or, more likely to be granted, an order reducing his alimony obligations in light of his retirement. When an ex-spouse's life situation or income changes, the courts can, on application by the ex-spouse, modify the alimony requirements. If his retirement income will not let him pay the same amount of alimony while also supporting himself, the court may grant him a reduction.
