Can an employer fire you but say that you can stay there and work for another 3 months?

I have a co-worker they told her she was fired after 13 years and told her that she can still stay and work but when her boss comes back after surgery leave she has to leave? Is that legal?

It is perfectly permissable for an employee to be given "notice" of their termination in advance. That is unless such action violates a union agreement or employment contract. The fact is that most work is "at will" which means that a company can set the condition of work much as it sees fit, absent some form of actionable discrimination.
