Can I apply for a SSN if my green card is lost?
Hi, I am a green card holder, but I lost it while I was abroad. The US embassy
will give me a transportation letter to be able to enter the states.I have found
out that applying for a green card might take months and I need a job as soon as
I come back. Can I apply for a SSN with I-94 only? what other documents would be
helpful?Thanks.

Yes, you should be able to apply for the SSN iwth the transportation letter you will be given by the Embassy as well as the passport stamp in the passport, which will/should indicate that you are entering the US as a green card holder.
