Can i be demoted for not be able to work on a day off.

My boss changes the schedule without
telling me. I had last Thursday off and
told my boss I had to bring my step son
to court. He then changes the schedule
and put me on reschedule and told me I
had to be there on Wednesday. After not
giving me Tuesday off when I told him I
may have jury duty. His response was ‘I
don’t know what to tell you you are on
the schedule.’

Yes, you can be demoted for not being able to work on your day off. That is unless this violates the terms of an employment contract or union agreement. The fact is that most employment is "at will" which means that a company can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit, absent some form of legally actionable discrimination. For your part, you can either accept your last minute scheduling, continue to complain but risk termination, or quit.
