Under the laws of all states in this coutnry you would not be legally responsible for a pre-existing debt of your spouse for back child support that he owes from a prior relationship. Given what you have written, I suggest that you place all income and other assets that you have in your own name so as to not commingle things in the event of a bank levy as to your spouse's debt.
