As long as the damages that you are being sued for were documented before any other tenant moved in after you vacated, then you can be so sued. However, "damges" are different from "normal wear and tear". Since you gave no details it's hard to say for sure just what occurred. However, legally speaking, a tenant cannot be charged for normal wear and tear.
