I wasn’t even present when this person agreed to give us money. There’s no written contract or promissory note.

If your company is a limited liability company, corporation or a partnership there is the potential at least to the partnership scenario that you could be personally held liable for the acts of the other assumed partner with respect to the subject loan that you have written about.
I would have a face to face meeting with the other person affiliated with your business to resolve the loan situation.
