Can I break a lease that my roommate and I both signed?
My roommate and I are both on the lease and have 9 months left of the 1 year lease. I need out of it. He’s physically and verbally abusive. I’m willing to pay my half of the rent until he finds a replacement roommate, but is that good enough? And how do I know for certain if when he does find a roommate, that he won’t lie and still ask me for my half of the rent?

If you have difficulties with your roommate, you cannot end your lease with your landlord unless he or she agrees to such in writing. If you wish to move out and continue paying rent to your landlord concerning your share pending a new roommate being found, you can do so.
However, I suggest that you pay your share directly to the landlord and keep in touch with the landlord as to making sure whether or not a replacement roommate is found so that you can stop making your payments for your share.
