First of all, are you entitled to a severance package? The fact is that as the payment of severance is not automatic; you'll need to check the terms of any applicable union agreement or employment contract that you may exist. If severance is not mentioned, then you're not entitled to any since it is not legally mandated under the law. In other words, as a general rule, in order to be eligible for severance, an employer must be legally obligated to pay it out.
