Can I sue a Payroll company for mishandling personal information?

I needed a copy of an old W2, so I decided to contact the company in question. I
started a chat session with no credentials, as a guest. My interaction with the
rep was very minimal. I asked for my W2, he asked for my name and year of the W2
and he sent me a link to it. The link is still active and I am sure anyone could
retrieve my information from there.

The fact is that compensation in such a sutuation can only be made for actual, not possible, losses, if such losses were cause by another's negligent or intentional act. Since nothing has happened to you, you have no claim here.

There is no compensation--and so no lawsuits--for what "could" or "might" happen, or for hypothetical risks. There is only compensation for actual losses or harm provably caused by another's actions or carelessness. So if nothing has happened to you due to this and you cannot prove a loss linked to it, you cannot sue.
