Can I sue my landlord for not properly repairing the heating and cooling unit in my home causing me excess money for heating and cooling cost?
I am a section 8 recipient in Alabama and I have been living in a home for five years where I have had to constantly battle my landlord about the expensive cost of heating and cooling my three bedroom home. I have asked him to check insulation, wiring, and vents and he refuses to do so. On a normal day my thermostat reads 85 degrees and up after 2 pm and it never cuts off. In the summer months I have around a $200/month light bill and vice verse for winter months. This doesn’t include infestation from termites and insect bites with my kids, allergies, sinus, etc.

Under the laws of all states in this country, a landlord is required to provide his or her tenant with safe and healthy conditions such as heat and cooling systems.
If your landlord is refusing to make the necessary inspections that you desire to ensure the safety of your rental, then you need to make a complaint against him or her with your section 8 housing representative over this issue. A section 8 representative will have the unit inspected and if there are code violations, the landlord will be required to make the repairs or he or she will be fined.
