Can I take legal action against someone who I allowed to drive my uninsured vehicle if they crashed into another vehicle?

My friend was homeless living out of his truck going to work. When his truck died he asked if he could use my vehicle to sleep in and go to work with since he had no other transportation. At the time my vehicle was not insured. After the second day he hit another vehicle and tried to keep it a secret from me. I only found out from a mutual friend. He said he was going to pay for the damages but when confronted about it he ignored all communication.
