Can my job release me if I am unable to relocate?

I am expecting my first child in 2 months and my job stated that I need to prepare to move within a month of me returning from leave. I do not have any family or support where they are asking me to move. Do I have any protection or should I start looking for new employment?

Your job has an absolute right to transfer you; and if you cannot move, they could certainly terminate you. The only exception would be if you have a written employment contract; if you do, you can enforce any terms of it which help or protect you. But without a contract, you are an employee at will, and your employer can change your employment in any way, or terminate it, at any time, for any reason. If you are terminated due to the inability to take a distant relocation (to a site too far to reasonably commute to), you may be eligible for unemployment. That said, it would be a good idea to start looking for another situation.
