An employer cannot fire you merely because of your filing a workers’ compensation claim. However, your employer can fire you while you have an open claim. It must be able to show there were reasons for firing you or laying you off that didn't have to do with your filing your claim. That having been said, if your firing had to do with some form of legally actionable discrimination/retaliation or was prohibited by the terms of an employment contract/union agreement, then you would have a claim.
