The attorney can represent anyone in another area of law.
Your attorney can communicate / correspond with the opposing party if the opposing party does not have an attorney. After the opposing party has retained an attorney, then your attorney will receive a letter from the opposing party's attorney that says something to the effect that all further communication should be with the opposing attorney rather than the opposing party.
