Do apartment complexes have to be inspected for safety?

My apartment is covered in mold, and I have a hole in my ceiling, and my electrical wiring sparks/flares when I plug something in. I’ve made written and verbal requests, the only thing that has been dealt with is the mold.Don’t these places have to be inspected annually? or something?

Under the laws of all states in this country, the fire department of the municipality where the apartment is located inspects the facility for the presence of fire extinguishers and smoke alarms.

However, as to water intrusion issues and the like, such inspections are not required on an annual basis by any governmental entity unless the rental is section 8 housing.

Given the problems that you are having with your rental and the landlord's failure to address them, I suggest that you contact your local building department and health department for an inspection of your rental. If the unit is "flagged" your landlord will be required to remedy the problem within a limited period of time.
