You are not required to have a lawyer but an employment attorney would clearly be beneficial. The lawyer will, far better than you, know what evidence is and is not relevant; know how to present that evidence for maximum effect; be able to address any defenses the employer tries to present; and will know how to best negotiate a good settlement for you, assuming a settlement is possible.
