Does a landlord have to provide notice if they don’t intend to renewa lease?

I am a student and at the end of the semester (May 5-6) I attached rent checks up until September, and gave the landlord a call informing them of that. I think I’ve shown that I didn’t want to leave. The lease expires at the end of July. I’m not sure if the lease specifies this issue but the landlord has rented the place to other people. I received a voicemail on July 20 telling me to move my belonging out, claiming they didn’t know I wished to stay. They unlocked my room (I’m out of town and the lease is still effective) and removed my belongings. Have they violated my rights?

You need to read the terms of your lease between you and the landlord in that its terms control the duties owed between each of you to the other. If the lease's terms expire at a set date, then the lease is over unless there is an option by you or the landlord to renew. Most leases will state that at the term's end, the tenant can remain on a month to month basis.

Have you received a formal notice of termination of your lease from the landlord? If not, read the terms of your lease about notices terminating the lease and how to go about it as well a show to extend it.

If you have paid the landlord rent through September 2011, he or she must be on notice that you intend to live in the unit through September?

If someone has been in your unit without permisison and without notice, that is improper. It seems that you need to speak with your landlord about your and his/her intent on the rental unit as to you.
