for the day if they call in?

While a salaried employee does not lose any money for missing a few hours of work, as long as he works some time that day, if a salaried employee misses an entire day of work, he is NOT paid--unless that is he uses paid time off (like a sick day) for the absence. Missing a whole day without using PTO costs him a day if salary.
