Yes, they do have this right, as intrusive as it seems. There is nothing intrinsically illegal about this; the law does let employers pry into employee free time (since, after all, it *could* affect the employer--e.g. if you are doing anything that would damage their reputation or alienate their customers, if what you do did become known); and if you don't respond to your employer, they could terminate you, unless you have a written employment contract protecting your job, since without a contract, you are an employee at will and may be terminated at any time, for any reason whatsoever.
