If my ex-husband died owing me a court ordered sum of $14k and he also adopted my son, how do I find out if there is any estate money before all his creditors find out?

We divorced 11 years ago; he lived in another state.

You will need to contact the executor or personal representative of his estate. They are in charge of paying creditors and distributing assets. As a creditor you are entitled to be paid (so long as there are enough assets to do so). Additionally, your son has inheritance rights; his adoption does not change that. The only way that your son would not inherit is if your ex-husband specifically disinherited him in his Will (if he even had a Will).
