if there is a resource for inexpensive criminal defense lawyers?
I am pretty certain that I will need a lawyer. I am under investigation for welfare fraud and am a single mother who is in school full-time.

You can see if you qualify for representation by Legal Aid (although their are income limits) or see if they can recommend someone to help you. Additionally, you should check if there is a law school nearby to where you live, as they typically run free/low cost clinics. Finally, you can contact the local Bar Association in your county; it may have a list of attorneys who will take cases "pro bono" (for free) or at least for a reduced fee based on your income/circumstances.
