f I get business and product liability coverage for my home-based internet business, can I just be a sole proprietor since I have no employees and no store-front?

I don’t think I necessarily need to get my business officially LLC’d.

Of course you can be a sole proprietor, but it is rarely advisable.  In most states, signing up to become a LLC costs very little and is very easy to do over the Internet, for the most part.  The additional liability protection is well worth it, and this form will allow your business to grow more easily.  If revenue really ramps up, you can even file for S-Corp status with the IRS, minimizing your income tax liability.
