An employee can be fired for any reason or nor reason at all, with or without notice, and by anyone designated to do so by their employer (i.e. it can be a co-worker). That's because in an "at will" work relationship, an employer can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit (absent actionable discrimination). This includes why and how to terminate an employee. Therefore, unless this action violated the terms of an employment contract or union agreement it was legal.
